West Papua facts

The result of 63 years of Indonesian illegal occupation in West Papua;

19 December 1961, Invasion of West Papua by Indonesia and the beginning of West Papuan Genocide.

15 August 1962, New York Agreement and the beginning of displacement of Papuan population throughout the world.

Up to 300 000 West Papuans internally displaced since 2018 and more than 50 000 in the diaspora spread throughouht the world.

Armed Conflict has been between the Organisasi Papua Merdeka OPM and Indonesian military since 1965. There are 8 active conflict zones in West Papua at present.

Indonesian invasion of West Papua resulted in the destruction of education and health in West Papua including the destruction of environment and culture.

The result of 63 years of exploitation and genocide under Indonesian rule is reflected by the current social indicators in West Papua. 30 % of Papuans are poor, 13.8 % of Papuans are unemployed and 20% overall population in Papua are illiterate.
